Sotheby’s is thrilled to unveil The Schlumberger Collection, an eclectic and multi-century assemblage that reflects both the dynastic heritage of the Schlumberger family and Anne Schlumberger's independent eye, cultivated through her lifelong engagement with art, architecture, design, and Surrealism. Presented across a series of global sales commencing 21 October, the collection celebrates one of the earliest and most important American patrons of Les Lalanne, featuring a number of uniquely commissioned works never before seen on the market. From her Houston residence to her home in the South of France, Anne Schlumberger created immersive environments where masterworks spanning centuries and continents existed in dialogue with the fantastical creations of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne.
At the heart of the collection is a landmark work: François-Xavier Lalanne’s "Hippopotame" Bar, pièce unique. Commissioned by Anne Schlumberger in 1976, the present example is particularly important in that it represents the first and only Hippopatamus Bar executed by the artist in copper, serving as the precursor to the later bronze editions.
Other highlights include a notable selection of commissioned works by Claude Lalanne, such as the family’s unique "Les Portes du Jardin" Gates and "Anemone" Balustrade Elements, in addition to Salvador Dalí’s “Swirling Sea” Necklace, and Claude Monet’s stunning “Vue de Rouen” painted at the outset of his Rouen Cathedral series.
The collection will be unveiled globally in a series of exhibitions and sales through 2026, beginning with select highlights on view at Sotheby’s Paris from 3-6 October, followed by an exhibition at Sotheby’s Hong Kong from 14–15 October. Notably, Monet’s Vue de Rouen depuis la côte Sainte-Catherine will be offered in the first Modern Evening sale at the Breuer on 20 November, and the Lalanne unique "Hippopotame" Bar will be offered during Sotheby’s inaugural Design sale series at the Breuer on 10 December.
