  • About

Since Samuel Baker founded Sotheby's in London in 1744, the company has occupied only two primary locations—the Strand, where we were housed until 1917 and 34-35 New Bond Street, where we have been ever since.

Located in the heart of London's Mayfair district, Sotheby's auctions offer an extraordinary diversity of objects and works of art from Impressionist & Modern Art and Contemporary Art to Old Master Paintings, 19th Century European Art and Islamic Art, as well as Decorative Art from Porcelain and Silver to French & English Furniture amongst many others.

The history of Sotheby's in London is marked by numerous watershed moments in auction history such as the 1958 sale of the Goldschmidt Collection—an Evening sale of Impressionist & Modern Art that established the gold standard for Impressionist & Modern Art and Contemporary Art.

Sotheby’s London offers comprehensive services for clients worldwide. We provide estimates and insurance valuations for all collecting categories and can also advise on shipping, buying and selling with Sotheby's. At present, we are actively seeking consignments in all collecting areas for inclusion in upcoming sales.

The London headquarters features Sotheby's Restaurant and The Story Café, where visitors can enjoy a unique dining experience, making it a destination for collectors and art lovers alike.

Sotheby's Restaurant & Café
Sotheby’s Restaurant
Sotheby’s Restaurant is a culinary haven at the heart of the art world, set in Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries. At the centre of this bustling international auction house, as masterpieces are appraised, hung, viewed and hammered down to buyers, a small group of dedicated chefs – artists in their own right – create dishes to sustain and entertain guests from across the world.

As a Mayfair institution with a dash of the unconventional, Sotheby’s Restaurant continues to keep the plates spinning, the menu is seasonal and changes weekly and is complemented by our in-house wine list.

Settle in with a coffee and pastries while we shine a spotlight on the untold story of the shredded Banksy; Lucian Freud’s Four Eggs on a Plate, unearthed at Chatsworth; the alchemy of industry experience, market intelligence and a true passion for art with Jenny Saville’s Shadow Study; the rediscovery of the legendary jumper worn by Diana, Princess of Wales; and the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé which sold for €135 million, the most expensive automobile in history, and more.
